Melitta
Baumeister is a German-born designer based in New York, who has made waves in the fashion
world with her innovative material use and future-thinking design. The Parsons
graduate cites architecture, fine art and materiality as influences on her
work, which, upon seeing these images, becomes entirely evident. Her garments
are essentially sculptures for the body (they’re made from silicone, allowing
her to create those flawless lines and unusual shapes) and yet they’re not completely out
of the realms of wearable possibility. Baumeister comments, ‘Shape is no longer determined through the
interplay of fabric and pattern, but by the mold into which it is cast’ something
which would resonate with anyone favouring a minimal aesthetic.
